A FIVE-month journey of encountering God
& sharing His love with others
You have purpose
The Discipleship Training School (DTS) is a five month, full-time Christian course designed to help you experience God personally, discover your purpose as a follower of Jesus and practice using your unique abilities to impact your world.
Become a part of a multi-cultural community of young people like yourself who want to know God and make God known. Experience restoration and transformation as you live out your faith in Malaysia and beyond.
Come, join us for an adventure of a lifetime!
what does it look like?
the learning Phase
Three months of intensive discipleship designed to bring personal restoration and transformation. You and your classmates will explore a range of topics, guided by experienced local and international Christian practitioners. You will deepen your personal relationship with God, learn how to follow Jesus in life and character and practice loving others.
In YWAM, our approach to training is holistic – “live-learn” – recognising that learning and growth don’t just take place through lectures in a classroom, but also through serving, living in community, one-on-one discipleship, small group discussions and more.
Outreach Phase
Two months of practicing everything you have learned already while using your unique abilities to demonstrate the love of God in Malaysia and beyond. You will have opportunities to connect with, care for and serve people from a myriad of cultures and backgrounds. Your team will partner with different churches and organizations who are impacting various communities with God’s love.
So whether you are helping to build houses, make meals, paint walls, teach children or holding the hurting, you are helping to Make God Known.

More information
A: YWAM Penang provides accommodation for all the students to stay together, usually in dorm situations in local houses.
Q: I live in Penang, can I still live at home?
A: The DTS is a 24/7 ‘live-in’ school. As part of the course you are required to live with the other students in community, even though you are local.
Q: What’s the schedule like?
A: The schedule is full-time with different activities including some of the weekends. From lectures in the mornings, praise & worship, prayer, small groups, one-on-one discipleship, serving the community through work duties, and ministry, including some evenings.
Q: Will the students go to their own churches on Sundays or does the DTS have its own service?
A: We do not have a DTS service. We encourage students to ‘adopt’ a church while they are here in Penang and attend each week making it their ‘church away from home.’. For local students, they may continue to attend their own church.
Q: Who are the teachers?
A: Live guest lecturers are the norm. Those who teach are other YWAM leaders, nationally and internationally, local YWAM staff, and other reputable speakers who are involved in the church locally or internationally. Occasionally, video lectures will be used.
Q: Can I just complete the lecture phase?
A: Unfortunately, no. The DTS is designed to include the lecture phase (learning) and outreach phase (practice) together. In fact, for most students the outreach phase is the highlight – the time when they grow in their relationship with God the most and see amazing things happen in and through them.
