Kawan (‘friend’ in Malay) is a drop-in centre serving the street-based community of Penang. We provide numerous regular services for free during each week to anyone who may be in need of them.
Drop-In Services
- Breakfast & lunch
- Safe resting/sleeping area
- Bathing & laundry facilities
- Counseling & referrals to other service centres
- Information on HIV/AIDS diseases & prevention
How can you help as a volunteer?
- Commit to a fixed or flexible schedule to help out at the Centre
- Be part of the street out-reach team on Wednesday evenings
- Conduct basic life-skills courses at the Kawan Drop-in Centre
- Be a counselor to reach out to Kawan friends
- Conduct bible studies, preferably in Hokkien

Kawan Shop is a community development project that supports the work amongst the street-based community of Georgetown. Items sold include clothes, shoes, books, toys, household items and more.
Shop Goals
- Raise funds through sales to support Kawan’s street projects
- Provide employment/vocation training for Kawan service users
- Provide good quality second hand clothes and household items
- Offer goods at affordable & attractive prices
- Build a greater awareness of the homeless situation in Penang
- Be a blessing to the local community of Penang
- Build relationships with local customers
